The 2019 Linda Mae Mahon Lema Foundation’s 4th annual live play reading will be a matinee performance featuring the story of Mrs. Irene West.
Mrs. West was the first African-American teacher in Elk Grove. A graduate of Fisk University in Tennessee, she came to Sacramento when her husband accepted a job transfer. Mrs. West applied for a teaching position at the Elk Grove Unified School District in 1962 at a time when the community was predominantly white, racial tensions were rising in the south and the civil rights movement was gaining energy nationwide.
Set against this backdrop, her story not only chronicles the conditions and sentiments of Elk Grove at the time, but is also an inspiring story of personal courage, determination and an overriding passion to teach.
